Call for Papers – EXTENSION TO FEBRUARY 1st, 2024


The Regional ICA Conference dedicated to “Food Communication” will take place in May 2024 in Dijon, France (link to website: https://icafood2024.sciencesconf.org/).

Given the links between Food Communication, Media, and Popular Culture, the Regional ICA Conference is collaborating with the ICA PMC Division to offer its members the possibility to participate in a PMC Panel at the Regional ICA Conference.


The panel will be dedicated to “Food & Popular Culture”. Proposals are invited to analyze the place, role, representation and effects of Food in/on/within Popular Culture. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

1.     The representation of food in popular culture in relation with race, gender, identity, or hierarchy;

2.     Food as a symbol in popular culture;

3.     The relation between food as a product of consumer culture and its representation on social media platforms as well as the creation of alternative popular understandings of food;

4.     The influence of popular culture on food, eating behavior, diet and health, with for instance the question of the impact of popular culture on people’s knowledge of food and health;

5.     The effects of popular discourses around health, obesity and beauty on food culture


Proposals should be about 400-600 words and submitted in English to: julie.escurignan@devinci.fr
Proposals will be reviewed by the steering committee of the Popular Media & Culture Division.
