New Official Journal

The PMC has a new official journal, Communication & the Public (SAGE), following a successful motion to the ICA Executive Committee in 2021. Recent issues of the journal include a special forum on Digital Culture and Society; a special issue on the “pathologies” of the idea of the public; and research articles on such topics as counterpublics, geomedia, terrorist media, and national image management.

Here’s what we currently have in mind to develop this partnership — we welcome your thoughts, ideas and suggestions as we enter the planning stages:

1. Annual special issue or special section of Communication & the Public featuring top PMC papers and panels from the ICA conferences;

2. Co-organization and co-hosting by the PMC and the journal of special topic forums, preconferences, and/or conference roundtables;

3. Cross-promotion of PMC and journal initiatives on social media and at ICA conferences.

About the Journal

Communication and the Public is an international peer-reviewed quarterly journal that publishes both theoretical and empirical research articles in the intersections of communication and the public broadly defined. It welcomes research in these areas from and about any parts of the world, especially the parts of the world where the experiences have been under-considered in the extant social and cultural theories or in communication studies. It publishes quality work in both social scientific and humanistic traditions.

The regular features of the journal include research articles, theoretical essays, forums and symposiums, and book reviews. To better reflect the multi-disciplinary thematic focus, the journal will publish frequent special issues. Proposals for special issues from any social scientific or humanistic disciplines are welcome.

CTP was launched in the spring of 2016 and is published jointly by Zhejiang University and SAGE for global distribution. The editors in chief are Yi-Hui Christine Huang, Chair Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at the City University of Hong Kong, China, and Yu Hong, Professor in the College of Media and International Culture at Zhejiang University. Professor Lu Wei at Zhejiang University serves as managing editor, with 48 top scholars from all over the world serving as editorial board members.

The journal is the first peer-reviewed English-language academic journal in the field of journalism and communication located on the Chinese mainland. The journal has held six international academic conferences on “communication and the public,” which have drawn broad attention from the international academic community. It has been indexed by ESCI and Scopus databases.
